Only 1,300 business strikes of this date were made and the 1871 is an underrated coin which doesn’t sell for the premium over dates such as the 1869 and 1870 which it deserves to. Unlike the ultra-low mintage dates from the 1880′s, the 1871 wasn’t hoarded by contemporary collectors and dealers.
This light yellow-gold example has a semi-prooflike obverse and a more frosty reverse. There is light wear only and good deal on both sides.
The last two AU53 examples of this date, both graded by PCGS but not approved by CAC, sold for $2,585 and $2,588 in 2011 and 2012.
This is the only CAC approved example in this grade; seven finer have been approved as well.
