Only 3,500 business strike 1870 three dollar gold pieces were produced. This issue was not saved by contemporary collectors and dealers and, as a result, it is not often seen in Uncirculated grades.
This prooflike “slider” shows just a touch of rub on the high spots. The surfaces are clean and vibrant while the strike is sharp. There is some light golden color on the obverse; the reverse is a deeper hue with a slash of yellow-gold at the right border.
The last PCGS AU58 CAC example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 3/12: 4012, at $3,738
The three dollar gold series is laden with excellent values and issues such as the 1870, in the higher circulated grades, seem really cheap to me.
CAC has approved 10 in AU58 but just one higher than this (MS62).
