Only 2,500 business strikes were made and unlike the low mintages issues from the 1880′s, the 1869 wasn’t saved by contemporary hoarders. Today, it is seldom seen in Uncirculated and most AU’s are bright and unappealing.
The choice, high end example has nice natural green-gold color with a splash of reddish toning in the upper left obverse field. The wear is even on the obverse and reverse and the surfaces are much cleaner than usual for this date.
No CAC approved AU50 has sold at auction. The last PCGS AU50 to sell was Heritage 1/13: 7097 which went cheaply at $1,880.
This coin is very good value in a series which is due for some careful collector examination.
CAC has approved just this one coin in AU50 and only five finer.
