RARE BORDERLINE UNCIRCULATED 1865 THREE DOLLAR GOLD PIECE
The 1865 is easily the rarest Civil War date in the Three Dollar series and it trails only the 1877 as the rarest business strike from Philadelphia in the series. Only 1,140 were struck and survivors number in the 200-300 range. While sometimes available in lower grades and less often in Gem, the number of choice collector grade 1865 Threes is very limited.
This delightful slider example is among the nicer Choice AU 1865 Threes I have seen or sold. It is lustrous and totally natural in appearance with nice color and very clean surfaces. A few small ticks in the left obverse field are not detracting.
The only PCGS AU58 example of this date to sell at auction since 2009 is this exact coin which brought $10,925 as Heritage 11/11: 4255.
A prize for the collector of important Civil War era coinage.
CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer.
