FRESH TO THE MARKET PCGS/CAC 1849-O GOLD DOLLAR
The 1849-O is numismatically significant as the first gold dollar from the New Orleans mint. It is scarce in MS62 to MS63 grades, rare in MS64 and very rare in Gem Uncirculated.
This choice example has never before been offered for sale to collectors and it is notable for its unquestionable originality. It is frosty and well struck with attractive natural orange-gold toning which is most visible at the obverse edge. The presence of a few old marks in the left obverse field precludes a significantly higher grade.
The last PCGS MS62 1849-O gold dollar with CAC approval to sell at auction realized $2,233 as Heritage 1/15: 6792. The present example is the first 1849-O gold dollar to be graded MS62+ by PCGS.
