The 1880-CC is the most available Carson City half eagle from this decade. It is still many times scarcer than any of the dates in the 1890′s. Properly graded AU55′s with original color and choice surfaces are harder to locate than most collectors realize.
This is a gem for the grade with pleasing medium rose and green-gold color with darker accents in the protected areas. The surfaces are clean and there is a good amount of luster beneath the aforementioned color. The strike is excellent as well with sharp centers and borders seen on both sides.
Only three PCGS AU55′s have sold at auction since the beginning of 2011 and none of these were approved by CAC; they realized $3,525, $3,565 and $3,738 respectively.
Here is a wonderful type coin for the collector who wants a single affordable but scarcer half eagle from the fabled Carson City mint or a nice piece for the date collector.
CAC has approved six in this grade with five finer.
