RARE 1876-S HALF EAGLE

A strong case can be made for calling this the rarest With Motto half eagle from the San Francisco mint. Only 4,000 were struck and around five to six dozen are known, mostly in the VF-EF range. A single example exists in Uncirculated and it grades PCGS MS64.

This fresh-to-the-market example seems awfully choice for the assigned grade and it appears closer to the EF40 level. It is well struck and free of problems with nice natural russet hues seen on both sides. A punchmark in the ear of Liberty is mint-made and is found on all known 1876-S half eagles.

No VF35 has sold at auction since 2004. A PCGS VF20 in an old holder (I graded it VF35) sold for $5,175 as Heritage 7/12: 4900.

This date remains undervalued and overlooked and it is an exceptional value at current market levels.

CAC has approved one in this grade and two finer (45 and 55) with a total of only four for the entire date.
