The 1874-S is a somewhat overlooked issue in the With Motto half eagle series. Of the 16,000 struck, only 125-150 are known with most in the VF-EF grade range. This date is scarce in the lower AU range and it becomes very rare in properly graded AU55. I have never seen an Uncirculated 1874-S half eagle and only one I consider to be AU58.
This is a pleasing, original example that would grade at least AU53 if not AU55 were it not for some marks in the left obverse field. Both sides retain some luster and show nice mottled russet and medium green-gold hues.
The last two PCGS AU50 examples of this date to sell at auction realized $2,990 (Heritage 4/11) and $3,105 (Heritage 3/10).
It is getting harder to find affordable but truly scarce half eagles from this mint but at under $4,000 this 1874-S is a good value.
