The 1874-S is a very underrated San Francisco half eagle with an estimated surviving population of 125-150 coins from an original mintage of 16,000. It is unknown in Uncirculated and there are likely no more than 12-15 properly graded AU’s accounted for, mostly in the 50-53 range and nearly always bright and baggy.
This medium green-gold and orange example hasn’t been brightened unlike most of its counterparts and it has the “meat” of a full 55 coin but has too many small ticks in the obverse fields to qualify as such. As on all known 1874-S half eagles, this piece has a small and lightly impressed mintmark.
Only three AU53′s have sold at auction since 2008 and none have been CAC approved.
At less than $4,000, this seems like excellent value to me.
CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer (AU55 and AU58).
