The 1870-CC is the first CC half eagle struck with a mintage of just 7,675 and under 100 are known, making it the rarest Carson City half eagle according to overall rarity. It is far and away the most popular half eagle from this mint and it has become the only affordable 1870-CC gold coin given the high price levels of the eagle and double eagle from this year.

The obverse of this coin is a full Very Good with the letters in LIBERTY nearly full and no wear into the rims. The obverse is a grade lower with more wear and incomplete rims. The appearance is great with a very natural look, no significant marks and an absence of obvious cleaning.

Back in the Summer of 2008, a PCGS Good 6 example of this date sold for $6,325 in the Heritage ANA auction. No others have sold since then, as one might expect.

The expression “if this coin could talk imagine the stories it could tell…” certainly holds true for this marvelously historic 1870-CC half eagle.

NOTE:  This coin has not yet been sent to CAC.
