The 1867-S is one of the scarcer With Motto half eagles from this mint. There are an estimated 75 known with most in very low grades (VF to EF). Properly graded AU50 to AU53 examples are rare and in AU55 to AU58, the 1867-S is very rare. There are currently none known or rumored in Uncirculated.

This fresh-to-the-market example is among the two finest 1867-S half eagles that I have seen. It is very well struck for the issue with the sharpest mintmark I can recall having seen on the date. The surfaces are frosty with pleasing blushes of rose-gold and the marks are limited to a few scattered marks in the fields. This is one of a small handful known which is choice and original and the eye appeal is well above average.

Only one AU58 1867-S half eagle has ever traded at auction, an NGC coin which realized $10,575 as Heritage 1/13: 5882 and which earlier brought $16,388 as DLRC 11/06: 1728. I am aware of a PCGS AU58 with CAC approval trading via private treaty for over $20,000.

A very significant coin for the San Francisco half eagle specialist.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
