AFFORDABLE 1860-S HALF EAGLE
The 1860-S is one of the more affordable No Motto half eagles from the San Francisco mint yet it is a legitimately scarce issue with fewer than 100 pieces known. This date saw considerable commercial use in the booming Western economy of the Civil War and it is not unusual to see pieces such as the present coin which show heavy wear.
For a coin graded VF30, this piece is quite lustrous and the detail is closer to a 35 or 40. The surfaces are somewhat extensively abraded but none of these marks are deep or truly detracting. Both sides show some nice light rose hues.
No PCGS VF30 example of this date has sold at auction since May 2008.
At just a bit over $2,000 this seems like a lot of bang for your coin buying buck.
CAC has approved three in this grade with a dozen finer.
