RARE PCGS/CAC AU50 1860-S HALF EAGLE

The 1860-S is the most available San Francisco half eagle struck between 1858 and 1865 yet it is still a scarce issue in all grades with an estimated 60-70 known from the original mintage of 21,200. This date is not often seen in AU grades and the few which have crossed the auction block in the past few years have been bright and unattractive.

This fresh to the market example is exceedingly choice for the grade with nice original medium rose and orange-gold hues over sleek, satiny surfaces. There are some light marks seen in the fields but none are obtrusive and this coin would not look out of place in a 53 holder. Some original dirt can be seen in the recesses, particularly on the reverse.

No PCGS AU50 1860-S half eagle has sold at auction since Heritage 2004 FUN: 7000 brought $5,175 well over a decade ago. No PCGS AU53 has sold since June 2006.

The rarity of dates such as the 1860-S have finally become widely recognized and after years of neglect, collectors are now focusing on No Motto San Francisco half eagles.

CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.

Ex Heritage 10/14: 5003 (as NGC AU53) where it sold, without a CAC sticker, for $4,994.
