This very overlooked issue is comparable in rarity to the 1859 and it is harder to find in higher grades than any Philadelphia half eagle made between 1843 and 1858. The 1860 is not often seen above AU55 and properly graded AU58′s are extremely scarce.
This frosty slider shows no real wear but there is some light bag friction on the cheek of Liberty as well as some ticks in the fields. The color is “right” for the issue with nice medium orange-gold hues and the overall eye appeal is excellent for the grade.
Only two PCGS AU58′s have ever sold at auction and the last one, ex Heritage 1/14: 6699, brought a strong $4,700.
PCGS has graded just five in this grade with two finer, yet this date remains very affordable in AU58. A wonderful opportunity for the cagey specialist.
CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
