For most collectors, the 1860-D is the final year of issue for Dahlonega half eagles in their collection, given the rarity and price level of the 1861-D. The 1860-D is a fairly available date but it is not often seen with natural color and surfaces.
If you like dirty, nasty Dahlonega gold, you will really like this 1860-D half eagle. It has some of the darkest green-gold coloration that I have seen on this date and this hue is contrasted by caked dirt on the high spots. If this description sounds unappealing, I’d suggest you see this coin in person as it is smooth, attractive and full of character!
There has been only one 1860-D half eagle in EF45 sold at auction since 2005. Graded by PCGS, it brought $2,530 as Heritage 10/09: 1444. No CAC approved EF45′s have ever sold at auction.
This coin has the “look” that sophisticated collectors of Southern gold covet.
CAC has approved just this coin in EF45 with eight finer.
