Variety 44-H, Medium D mintmark. Not designated by NGC.
With just 10,366 the 1859-D has the second lowest mintage figure of any half eagle from the Dahlonega mint. There are an estimated 175-225 known, mostly in the EF40 to AU50 range. Collector quality EF and AU examples are not easy to locate as most have been scrubbed and/or processed.
This example has a natural appearance with deep russet colors which become most intense at the obverse border and across much of the reverse. The surfaces show just a few minor marks and there is dirt in the recesses, indicating that nothing has been done to alter the appearance of the surfaces.
Only two straight-graded AU50 examples of this date have sold at auction since 2009 with the last of these being Stacks Bowers 2/12: 7545 which realized $2,875.
A pleasing, affordable D mint half eagle which is perfect for type.
