The 1858-C is among the more available Charlotte half eagles, which makes it popular as a type coin for collectors seeking a single high grade issue from this mint. In AU55, the 1858-CC is seemingly available but most of the coins in holders are not choice and those pieces with nice color and surfaces are harder to locate than generally realized.
This example has a significant amount of luster present and is lightly worn. The strike shows typical softness on the curls but this should not be mistaken for wear and the overall quality of this piece is well above average for the grade. A few marks in the right obverse field are mentioned for accuracy.
No PCGS AU55 1858-C half eagle has sold at auction since 2012.
This is a perfect coin for the date collector or the type collector and it has become hard to locate C mint half eagles of any date in this grade with this degree of originality and eye appeal.
