The 1857-O is the final No Motto half eagle from the New Orleans mint. Only 13,000 were struck and slightly over 100 are known in all grades. It is comporable to the 1855-O and 1856-O and like these two dates it is nearly impossible to locate above AU55. I know of just three to five in Uncirculated of which the finest is a sole PCGS MS63.
This well-detailed piece is, as usual, a bit liberally abraded with some marks on both sides. It has no real luster to speak of which is primarily due to its medium russet color and, also, is not atypical for this issue. The eye appeal is very acceptable for the date and grade.
The last PCGS EF45 example of the 1857-O half eagle to sell at auction was Stack’s Bowers 8/11: 9427, which brought $2,185.
Affordable better date New Orleans half eagles are in strong demand and I predict that this piece will sell quickly.
