The 1855-O is the third rarest half eagle from this mint after the 1847-O and the 1842-O. Fewer than 100 examples are known from an original mintage of 11,000 and when available, the typical 1855-O grades VF-EF with poor eye appeal and limited originality.

This choice, fresh 1855-O is the first nice example of this date which I have owned in some time. It is reasonably well detailed and shows nice russet and green-gold color with contrast between the darker fields and the lighter devices. Both sides have some luster and the only mark worthy of description is located below the first T in STATES.

The last PCGS EF45 example to sell at auction was the recolored Heritage 12/13: 5030 which brought $2,938. In Heritage’s 4/14 sale, an NGC AU50 brought $4,700.

If you collect New Orleans gold, specifically half eagles, you know how difficult it is to find a nice 1855-O.

CAC has approved this one coin in EF45 with only two finer.
