The 1855-D is among the scarcer half eagles from this mint with an estimated 125-150 known, mostly in the VF-EF range. This date is very scarce in the AU50-55 grades and rare in properly graded AU58. Uncirculated examples are extremely rare.
Unlike most known examples, this piece shows rich natural color with nice orange-gold and greenish hues well-blended and similar in shading on the obverse and the reverse. The strike is typical for the issue with weakness at the centers, especially on the neck of the eagle. There is a thin area of mint-made roughness in the planchet on the obverse from the throat out into the left field which is not detracting.
The last NGC AU53 1855-D Medium D half eagle to sell at auction brought $3,290 as Heritage 1/13: 2294 and that example was well inferior to the present piece.
