Variety 1. Strong mintmark and very scarce as such.
Many 1854-C half eagles are seen with faint mintmarks placed far to the right. The sharp mintmark coins, with the C placed far to the left, are very scarce and are almost never seen with original color and surfaces.
This very choice example shows natural even orange-gold color with dirt in the protected areas adding further credence to its original status. The surfaces are clean while the detail is excellent and is suggestive of at least an EF45 grade.
To my way of thinking, 1854-C half eagles with sharp mintmarks should sell for at least a 50% premium over prices for the weak mintmark coins and maybe more if they are choice and original.
CAC has approved just two in this grade and three finer.
