The 1853-D is one of the most available Dahlonega half eagles which makes it perfect for type purposes. It is scarcer than believed in Choice AU as most seen in AU55 holders are low end due to poor strikes and repeated enhancements.
This is a very choice piece with nice, even green-gold color. Many 1853-D half eagles are poorly struck but this piece is sharply impressed at both the borders and the centers. The surfaces are clean and the eye appeal is far above average for the date and grade.
No CAC approved AU55 from either NGC or PCGS has sold at auction. A nice AU55 without CAC approval typically trades in the $3,000-3,250 range.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 12 finer.
