The 1851-D is a scarcer issue in the Dahlonega half eagle series but it gets little premium in lower grades. It is not often seen with natural color and choice surfaces and some have a weak mintmark, as made.
This very choice VF shows deep natural russet and green-gold color. It is very close to being a full 40 coin and I have seen countless D mint half eagles graded “40″ which had far less eye appeal.
No CAC approved VF35 1851-D half eagle has ever appeared at auction.
CAC has approved two in this grade with eight finer.
