The 1851-C is a mid-level scarcity in the Charlotte half eagle series but it is actually among the hardest issues to find with original color and surfaces. I rank it as the fifth rarest of 24 half eagles from this mint and it deserves to sell to a much larger premium in the 45-55 grades than it currently does.
This example is slightly prooflike with attractive deep natural green-gold color with a slight orange-gold undertone. The detail is excellent and I actually thought this piece might grade AU50 due to its originality and eye appeal.
Only two PCGS EF45 examples have sold at auction since 2007 and none have had CAC approval.
Excellent value in this grade and a pleasing, wholesome example of an underrated date.
This is the only 1851-C half eagle in this grade to be approved at CAC; four finer coins have been approved as well.
