The 1851-C is the second scarcest Charlotte half eagle from the 1850′s, after the 1854-C. It is not often seen above EF45 and most of the AU50 to AU55 examples which exist are severely abraded and have poor eye appeal.
This even green-gold piece is well detailed and it shows more definition at the centers than usual. The obverse is virtually at the choice level; the reverse shows a noticeable contact mark above the left wing.
At one point in time, this piece had some unsightly black spots on the rims but these have been expertly removed and the appearance is very pleasing.
This date is hard to find better than this yet the present example is still affordable.
This is the only 1851-C half eagle in AU50 approved by CAC; three finer pieces have been approved as well.
