The 1850-D is one of the rarest Dahlonega half eagles in higher grades. I am aware of just four or five which grade Uncirculated and none are higher than MS61. High end AU’s are very rare and it is unlikely that more than six to eight properly graded AU58′s exist.
This is one of the most important offerings in the Western Michigan collection. Virtually every known About Uncirculated 1850-D half eagle is bright from past cleanings and/or shows severe weakness of strike on the mintmark. This piece has deep, natural russet color on the obverse and reverse and it is exceptionally well detailed; more so, in fact, than any other 1850-D that I can recall having seen. The surfaces are choice and original and the eye appeal is excellent for the date. This is clearly a special 1850-D.
There are no good auction comparables as a CAC approved AU58 has never been offered for sale…until now.
CAC has approved this one coin in AU58 with none finer.
