The 1849-C is one of the more available Charlotte half eagles and it can be found in all circulated grades without a great deal of effort. Properly graded AU58′s with original surfaces are not often seen, however.

This is a superb “gem slider” with deep, even green-gold colors on the obverse and the reverse. The underlying surfaces appear to be quite lustrous and there are just a few small handling marks seen in the left obverse. It is likely that this piece saw little–if any circulation and it is has eye appeal not often seen on any Charlotte half eagle, regardless of the date or grade.

The last AU58 example of this date with CAC approval to sell was a PCGS coin offered as Heritage 3/11: 4750. It brought $4,888 and was not nearly as nice as the present example, in my opinion.
