The 1849-C is among the more common Charlotte half eagles in higher grades but it is seldom seen with deep, natural color and even less with a sharp, even strike. This coin has both.
The strongest feature of this lovely coin is its rich, natural color which is unusual for the issue in that it is a reddish-gold hue; usually this date tends more towards green-gold due to the use of Appalachian gold. Some marks in the right field are old and well-concealed by the depth of the color. The eye appeal is well above-average, even for this date.
Four AU53 1849-C half eagles have sold at auction since 2011 and the last NGC example (non-CAC) brought $3,025 as Great Collections 7/13: 127825.
Regardless of date, Charlotte half eagles with this wonderful “look” are hard to locate.
This is the only AU53 of this date to be approved by CAC; 13 higher grades coins have been approved as well.
