The 1847-C is one of the more available Charlotte half eagles in terms of total number known to exist. It is, however, a scarce and underrated issue in higher grades (AU and Uncirculated) with very limited availability above the AU50 to AU53 range.
This clean, lustrous example shows warm golden-orange colors on both sides and is quite well detailed for the issue. There is a small obverse scrape between stars eight and nine on the obverse and a thin mint-made grease stain on the reverse from the beak to the right (facing) wing. A small rim bump above ME in AMERICA is difficult to see in the holder.
The last comparable example to sell at auction was the non-CAC Bowers and Merena 3/10: 3755 at $3,508. There have been no other PCGS AU53 1847-C half eagles to sell at auction since before the end of 2002.
A nice example which is equally suitable for the date or type collector.
CAC has approved just this one example in AU53 with seven finer.
