An estimated 100-125 1846-O half eagles exist from an original mintage of 58,000. When available, this date tends to be found in the EF grades and Choice AU pieces are very scarce. This date is rare and expensive in Uncirculated so for most New Orleans half eagle collectors, a nice AU55 is a perfect piece for their date set.
This bright yellow gold example shows only minor wear limited to the high spots. It is well struck and very lustrous with a few ticks in the obverse fields limiting the grade; a small rim bruise at 6:00 on the obverse is barely noticeable.
Only three PCGS AU55 examples, including this piece, have appeared at auction since July 2005. An especially choice CAC approved PCGS AU55 brought a strong $7,050 as Heritage 3/14: 10619.
Ex Heritage 10/15: 3521 where it sold for $4,250.
