The 1846-O half eagle is comparable in overall rarity to the 1845-O and 1851-O but it is seen less often in higher grades than those two issues. The 1846-O is rare in properly graded AU58 and it is very rare in Uncirculated with just five or six known.
This fresh-to-the-market example is really choice for the date with lovely natural green-gold color atop choice, frosty surfaces. The strike is sharp and other than a few minor scuffs in the obverse fields, the lack of marks is unusual (to say the least) for this typically abraded issue. I recently sold a PCGS/CAC AU58 example of the 1846-O half eagle and this second coin is very similar in quality and appearance.
No AU58′s have been auctioned since Goldberg 5/11: 1494 brought $5,060; this PCGS coin was not CAC approved or very choice. An extremely pleasing PCGS AU55 with CAC approval realized $7,050 as Heritage 3/14: 10619.
An important coin for the New Orleans gold collector.
CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer.
