While not as rare in high grades as the 1846-C or 1846-D half eagles, collector quality 1846-O half eagles appear with lower frequency. This is a date that I still regard as undervalued and I have not handled many in the last few years.
The color on this example is a deep, even green-gold and there is some dirt lodged in the protected areas of the reverse. The stars at the left obverse are a bit weak from die lapping; the centers show an average amount of detail. A very shallow mint-made planchet flaw in the left obverse field extends out from the chin towards star two.
There have been just three slabbed, problem-free AU50 1846-O half eagles (all graded by NGC) sold at auction since the Summer of 2005. The last was Stack’s Bowers 2011 ANA: 9392 which brought $2,588.
