RARE PCGS/CAC EF45 1846-C QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1846-C is tied for third rarest of 20 quarter eagles from Charlotte. Of the 4,808 struck around 100-125 are known and most are unappealing.

This fresh-to-the-market examples is a textbook Choice EF with deep, natural green-gold color and some dirt in the recesses. The surfaces are uncommonly choice for the issue and the diagnostic obverse die rust is not as obtrusive as it would appear on a higher grade coin. Some weakness of strike at the centers does not detract and this is a great example for the sophisticated date collector of Charlotte quarter eagles.

Only one PCGS EF45 has sold at auction since 2006 and it realized $3,525 as Heritage 4/15: 6070.

This is the only CAC approved 1846-C quarter eagle in EF45 with just two higher; just three have been approved for the entire issue.
