INCREDIBLE PCGS/CAC AU58 1807 QUARTER EAGLE

With a mintage of 6,812, the 1807 is easily the most available Capped Bust Right quarter eagle but "available" is a relative term as only a few hundred are known and the majority have been cleaned and are unappealing as a result. There are a small number known with dynamic natural color and choice surfaces and these command strong premiums for the relevance to type collectors.

I haven't seen every AU58 example of this date but I would be hard-pressed to believe that finer 1807 quarter eagle exists in this grade. In fact, I have seen (and owned) a number of 1807 quarter eagles graded MS61 and even MS62 which paled in comparison to this piece. What is it about this 1807 that I find so appealing? I love its warm reddish-gold color, is immaculate surfaces and its bold strike as well as what appears to be a total lack of wear on the high spots. This is a coin which can truly be said to be "PQ" and I use this designation sparingly.

Two PCGS AU58 1807 quarter eagles have traded at auction since early 2013 and both were low end, non-CAC pieces. Stacks Bowers 3/15: 6090 brought $24,675 while its counterpart Heritage 9/13: 6710 realized $22,325. Neither was remotely as choice as the present coin.

Yes, this 1807 quarter eagle is expensive. But it represents astonishing quality for the date and type and it is a coin you will never have to apologize for when you display your early gold holdings.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade (which seems inflated) and four finer.
