The 1907 High Relief is a popular issue which qualifies on anyone’s list of trophy coins. It has multiple levels of demand and it appeals to a host of collectors who might not ever buy another U.S. gold coin.
In my experience, finding truly original High reliefs is very hard as many have been dipped, processed or “messed” with. Any piece with choice original surfaces and natural color is hard to find and worth a premium over a typical example.
This piece is just stunning with superb rich golden coloration. The surfaces show just a few tiny marks which very narrowly keep this coin from grading MS65 but I promise you that it is choicer than many High reliefs which reside in MS65 holders.
To my way of thinking, a CAC approved MS64+ is the best value grade for this issue as an average quality non-CAC MS65 will cost you $45,000-50,000 and it is unlikely to be more cosmetically appealing than the present example.
CAC doesn’t indicate how many of the 113 Wire Rim 1907 High Relief double eagles it has approved are, in fact, MS64+. My best guess is that fewer than 10 are plus grade coins.
