The 1892-CC is the least available of the common CC half eagles from the 1890′s and it is considerably harder to find than the ubiquitous 1891-CC. In Uncirculated, it is available in MS60 to MS61 but it becomes scarce in properly graded MS62 and it is rare above this.
This bright, frosty example shows marks consistent with the assigned grade; none are deep or detracting. The strike is sharp and the naked-eye appearance is pleasing with an especially bold strike.
The last NGC MS62 example of this date to sell at auction was Stacks Bowers 3/11: 6569 which brought $2,875; it was not approved by CAC. I can find no auction records for a PCGS or NGC 1892-CC half eagle in this grade with CAC approval.
Trends jumps to $9,500 in MS63 and for most collectors, a high-end MS62 such as the present example is a solid value at a fraction of this price.
CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer.
