SPLENDID HIGH GRADE 1890-CC HALF EAGLE

The 1890-CC is one of just four Carson City half eagles made during the final decade of production for this mint. It is common in the lower Uncirculated grades but it becomes scarce in MS63, rare in MS64 and extremely rare in MS65 and higher.

This stunning example is reflective with a satiny texture and it is overlaid with vivid natural orange-gold color which deepens at the rims. It is well struck and vibrant and it kept from a full 64 grade solely by a few very small ticks in the left obverse field. That said, this coin wouldn’t look out of place in a PCGS MS64 holder!

There is one other PCGS MS63+ 1890-CC half eagle and it is also CAC approved. It sold for $9,400 as Heritage 10/15: 3529 and it had “busier” surfaces than this piece.

If it were available, a PCGS/CAC MS64 1890-CC half eagle would likely sell in the $15,000 range. This piece is perfect for the fastidious type collector seeking a single high grade Carson City half eagle for a type set or for a specialist working on a memorable date set of CC fives.

CAC has approved 11 in MS63 (two in MS63+) with only four finer.
