As with all silver coins from this era, the 1867 half dollars from Philadelphia were melted extensively and are much scarcer than their comparatively high mintage (449,300) would suggest. There are a few dozen known in Uncirculated an this figure includes a few Gems. The finest known is a remarkable PCGS MS68, ex Bowers and Merena 4/05: 568, which sold for a healthy $40,250.
This very choice example is the epitome of originality with nice dusky silver toning that deepens to golden-orange at the borders. The underlying surfaces are very frosty and show just a few well-hidden marks. The strike is sharp and the overall appearance is outstanding.
In October 2012, this same coin, before it was approved by CAC, sold for $4,113 in a Heritage auction.
At less than $4,000 this seems like exceptional value to me.
CAC has approved just two examples in MS64 with one finer (MS65).
