While readily available in circulated grades and not all that scarce in MS60 to MS63. the 1845-O half dollar is extremely scarce in properly graded MS64 and very rare in Gem. I am aware of just two or three Gems and nothing finer than MS65.
This fresh-to-the-market example shows vivid natural blue and green pastels, in different configurations, on the obverse and reverse. It is well struck and frosty with just a few marks in the right obverse field keeping it from consideration at a higher level.
The last MS64 example to sell at auction was a nice PCGS coin which brought $8,813 as Stack’s Bowers 7/13: 4125. Only two MS64′s, in total, have been sold at auction since 2004.
All No Motto half dollars from New Orleans are rare and very undervalued in Uncirculated and the 1845-O is no exception.
