WB-105. Medium Date with Tripled 842.

No other area of American numismatics remains as undervalued as No Motto half dollars, especially the issues from the 1840′s. For a reasonable sum, collectors can still purchase really attractive MS63 and MS64 coins which are truly scarce. This 1842 Medium Date is just such an example. This date is moderately scarce in the lowest Uncirculated grades but it is very scarce in MS64 and extremely rare finer. The best example known, graded MS66 by PCGS, sold for $25,850 in 2014.

This fresh, choice coin is toned to a rich even russet hue with underlying apple green, gold and light reddish pastels. The details are excellent and the surfaces are clean with no detracting marks. This piece has great eye appeal due to its obvious originality.

Two non-CAC PCGS MS64′s sold at auction in 2014 for $3,055 and $3,290, respectively.

At under $4,000 this seems like especially good value to me.

CAC has approved six in MS64 with just one finer (66).
