Large Date variety. In 1854, the New Orleans mint struck eagles with a Small Date and a Large Date. The latter employed a silver dollar logotype and the numerals are extremely large. These varieties are comparable in rarity although the Large Date is a bit more available in the higher AU grades.

This is one of the nicest circulated 1854-O Large Date eagles that I have seen or sold. It is totally original with deep, dark green-gold color that is accentuated by some color on the high spots. This is almost certainly a coin that was sourced from Europe but it doesn’t have a typical two-tone “Euro” look. There is just the slightest amount of rub on the high spots of the obverse and the strike is excellent with much sharper detail than usual at the centers.

As remarkable as it seems, there hasn’t been a PCGS AU58 example of this variety that has sold at auction since Heritage 5/05: 8767 that brought $5,060.

All in all, this is a delightful example of this interesting variety and it is not far removed from being in the Condition Census for the issue.

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
