The 1844-O eagle is comparable in rarity to the 1845-O and it is much harder to find than the 1843-O or the 1847-O. It is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This light green-gold example is well detailed and retains some luster. There are a few small marks clustered in the right obverse field but this piece is far cleaner than most seen and it offers claims to a higher grade.
Two PCGS AU53 examples with CAC approval have crossed the auction block in 2015 and both have realized $2,585.
CAC has approved six in this grade with 10 finer.
