While obviously not as rare as the first-year-of-issue 1841-O, the 1842-O eagle is much scarcer than dates such as the 1843-O, 1844-O and 1845-O. It is not often seen above AU53/55 and properly graded AU58′s are very rare. I am aware of four in Uncirculated including a PCGS MS61 that brought a remarkable $74,750 as Stacks 8/10: 1094.
This lustrous light green-gold example shows only the slightest amount of wear on the obverse while the reverse is essentially new and close to choice. The surfaces are lightly scuffed but cleaner than usual for the date and the strike is excellent with full details seen at the centers.
The last PCGS AU58 to sell at auction was Heritage 4/06: 3915 which realized $15,065. A nice PCGS 55 1842-O eagle just brought $8,825 in the Heritage 3/14 auction.
Only three examples of this date have been graded AU58 by PCGS (with three finer) and, to the best of my knowledge, they are all in tightly-held collections.
