As with all the earliest date Philadelphia eagles, the 1841 is rarely seen above AU55. Properly graded AU58′s are quite rare and this date is very rare in Uncirculated with just five or six known in Uncirculated.
This is the single finest AU58 1841 eagle I have ever owned. It is an essentially “new” coin with lovely medium yellow-gold color and no real wear, just some minor friction on the obverse high spots. The strike is full, the surfaces are free of detracting marks and this coin has eye appeal to spare.
Only three PCGS AU58 examples have sold at auction since early 1998. I paid $4,994 for a non-CAC piece offered as Legend Morphy 5/14: 427; I paid $4,994.
This is the only 1841 eagle in this grade to have been approved by CAC and no higher graded examples have yet to be “beaned.”
