The 1838 is one of the most popular dates in the entire Liberty Head eagle series due to its status as a distinct first-year-of-issue. It features the first incarnation of the Gobrecht design, which was modified in 1839. Only 7,200 were struck and under 100 are likely known today with most in the VF-EF range.

This choice example is housed in an old green label holder and it appears to be finer than its current EF45 grade suggests. It is well-struck and nicely toned with old, natural orange-gold hues over surfaces which appear to be free of significant marks and which retain some luster. There are some light old hairlines seen on both sides but the overall appearance is outstanding. In my experience, the vast majority of 1838 eagles have negative eye appeal due to zealous cleaning(s) and extensive abrasions.

The 1838 eagle is an issue with true multiple levels of demand and it appears on numerous want lists. This is a really pleasing example which should satisfy most collectors.
