AFFORDABLE BUT CHOICE 1801 EAGLE

BD-2, R-2.

The 1801 is among the more available Heraldic Eagles, along with the 1799 and 1803. It is not often seen in collector grades and most examples in Very Fine or Extremely Fine holders have either been cleaned and/or processed or show some sort of negative eye appeal.

This neat example was likely a pocket piece as it shows extensive but even wear. Early eagles didn’t tend to circulate all that much so it is unlikely that this piece saw enough use in commerce to acquire this much wear. All details are clear and the surfaces have a nice, natural appearance with medium green-gold color contrasted by a rich dusky hue through the obverse border and across much of the reverse. The eye appeal is well above what you might expect based on the grade.

Heritage 4/14: 5762, housed in an old green label holder and accurately graded VF25, sold for $12,925. It wasn’t approved by CAC.

You can buy an 1801 eagle in an EF holder for about what I’m asking for this VF but I can guarantee you the coin wont be as choice or cosmetically appealing as this piece. One of my favorite purchases from the recent Long Beach show!

CAC has approved just this one coin in VF25 with 72 finer.
