Only 6,300 business strike 1870 gold dollars were produced and unlike the low mintage dates from the later years of this decade, examples were not saved by collectors. This date is not often seen in properly graded MS64 and Gems are very scarce.
This beautifully toned borderline Gem has splashes of very rich orange-gold on the obverse and reverse. A few small ticks on the cheek of Liberty preclude a higher grade but this coin has terrific eye appeal for an MS64.
Great Collections 4/13: 112015, also graded MS64 by PCGS and approved by CAC, sold for $2,990. The present example, on account of its superb color, is worth a small premium.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with nine finer.
