The mintage of gold dollars increased in 1866 to 7,100 business strikes but this is still a hard date to find, quite a bit more so, in my opinion, than the 1867, 1868 or 1869. The 1866 gold dollar is not often seen above MS63 and Gems are quite rare.

This nice, original example is distinguished by pleasing medium natural reddish-gold and orange hues atop frosty surfaces. There are a few small scuffs here and there which limit the grade as well as a small area of roughness in the planchet, as made, below the right side of the truncation.

The last PCGS MS63 example of this date to sell at auction realized $2,185 as Heritage 3/11: 4600 and this coin was not CAC approved. It is the only PCGS MS63 gold dollar to be auctioned since 2005.

A scarce coin in this grade and very good value at current levels.

CAC has approved four in this grade with 13 finer.
