The 1859-S is the most available of the Type Three SF gold dollars from the 1850′s but it is still not a common date, as it mintage of 15,00 would suggest. It is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and choice, original AU58′s are rare.
This frosty slider shows pleasing natural medium orange-gold color. There is very little actual wear but there is enough light rub on the high spots to begrudgingly agree with the assigned AU58 grade. The strike is a touch light at the central obverse while the reverse is well detailed. This is a pleasing coin with good luster and a nice overall appearance.
The most recent APR for a CAC approved AU58 example of the 1859-S gold dollar is this same coin, which sold for $1,840 as Heritage 3/11: 4598.
At less than $2,000, this coin seems like a great value to me.
CAC has approved five in this grade with none finer.
