The 1857-S is the first of only five Type Three gold dollars from this mint and it is a very scarce issue with only 10,000 struck. It is most often seen in the EF45-AU55 range but very seldom with natural color and surfaces.
This is a wonderfully fresh example with very attractive deep natural russet color on both sides. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are very clean no scuffs or marks of note. A bit of dirt in the protected areas attests to its originality.
The last PCGS AU53 example with CAC approval to sell at auction was Heritage 4/11: 6278 which brought $1,208 but which, in my opinion, was less choice than the present example.
A great value for the savvy collector with a budget of under $2,000 per coin.
CAC has approved two in this grade with seven finer.
